This is an unprecedented time in history. The COVID-19 pandemic is having an impact on the health of our loved ones, the health of the global economy, and the way we live our daily lives. As we continue to navigate through these unique and evolving challenges, we want you to know that IIN is here for you. We are working together with University of British Colombia and health workers in our local community, to ensure that Deaf young people and their communities keep extremely high personal hygiene, they practice social distancing, wear face masks and gloves as well as have enough food and supplies to sustain themselves and their families. We are also ensuring that these groups have information they need about the pandemic. Found here on our Youtube Channel

As we address a pandemic that will no doubt become a chapter in the history books, our commitment to serving our community will not waver. Many organisations today are stepping up to help, because no organisations can do it alone; we’re calling on companies across the financial ecosystem, food/ agricultural system, individuals to come together to help to help the most vulnerable during this crisis. We all need to support our employees and look for ways to help our communities navigate these waters.

It is during times like these that courage, generosity and resilience make a difference. Please consider donating to our COVID-19 Response activities on our Donate Page.

INFORMATION FOR OUR DEAF AND DISABLED COMMUNITY AND TO THE WORLD AT LARGE:

About Coronavirus:

This is a new virus linked to the same family of viruses as Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) and some types of common cold.

It is spread through direct contact, respiratory droplets like coughing, sneezing, and touching surfaces contaminated with the virus. It is not yet known how long the virus survives on surfaces, but simple disinfectants can kill it.

Symptoms can include fever, cough and shortness of breath. In more severe cases, infection can cause pneumonia or breathing difficulties.

The use of a medical mask is advised if you have respiratory symptoms (coughing or sneezing) to protect others. These masks worn, they can be used and disposed of properly to ensure their effectiveness and avoid any increased risk of transmitting the virus.

The use of the mask alone is not enough to stop infections, and must be combined with frequent hand washing, covering sneezes and coughs, and avoiding close contact with anyone  with cold or flu-like symptoms (coughing, sneezing, fever)

This virus is fatal in some cases, so far mainly among older people with pre-existing medical conditions.
