INTRODUCTION No meal in Cultural Buganda would be complete without matooke. In fact, the Baganda are so taken up with the word "emere" (food being the transliteration) means matooke. To be invited to somebody’s home in Buganda or western Uganda and be served pasta, rice and Irish as a staple is downright frowned upon and considered near unorthodoxy. Only the Baganda conjure up the idea of giving matooke names and it is commonplace for the matooke vendors to refer to different varieties of matooke with names such as nandigobe, moussakala, kibuzzi, nakyinkyike, and nakitembe. Join Rosemary as she fondly recalls her paternal grandmother who would never tire of eating matooke for breakfast in the form of "Gwolu" (cold leftover from the previous night served at breakfast). She will prepare for us Lunch, steamed and mashed. And maybe "katogo" form, with a few fingers of matooke, onions, tomatoes, salt, water and ghee for breakfast the next day! About the tour The highest-ranked university in sub-Saharan Africa in 2020 by the U.S. News & World Report ranking, Makerere is Uganda's oldest and largest high learning institution first established as a technical school in 1922 and became an independent national university by 1970. It currently has 9 colleges and one school with alumni such as President Milton Obote, Julius Nyerere, Benjamin Mpaka, Joseph Kabila and Mwai Kibaki, as well as prominent writers like Ngugi wa Thiong'o were at one point in their writing and academic careers at Makerere University. The College of Health Sciences and the research departments are working together with Uganda's Ministry of health to enhance COVID-19 awareness, and research focused on current issues to support evidence-based decision making, and mitigate the impact of the pandemic on essential health and other services, especially in vulnerable groups such as adolescents and children, refugees, among others. The University also inhabits and engages many persons with disabilities and actually Rosemary attends the Business school for her undergraduate degree! About the tour Locally & popularly known as the "Gaddafi National Mosque", this Muslim place of worship was renamed as the "Uganda National Mosque" in 2013 following the death of Colonel Muammar Gaddafi of Libya who commissioned it as a gift to Uganda, and for the benefit of the Muslim population. Uganda has many mosques but this one is a skyscraper mosque. It was completed in 2006, and officially opened in June 2007 under the name Gaddafi National Mosque. It houses the head offices of the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council, seats up to 15,000 worshipers and can hold another 1,100 in the gallery and 3,500 on the terrace. One can view all the seven hills that make up the capital city - Kampala on the Minaret! About the tour At its core on the hilltop is the former palace of the Kabakas of Buganda, built in 1882 and converted into the royal burial ground in 1884. The Royal Tombs at Kasubi are located on 30 hectares of traditionally-farmed agricultural hillside . They are the final resting places of the last four Kabakas (kings) of the 700-year old Buganda Kingdom; Muteesa I, Mwanga II, Daudi Chwa II, and Sir Edward Muteesa II. On 16 March 2010, at about 8.30 pm local time, the Kasubi tombs were destroyed by fire and the cause of the fire is as yet unknown! About the tour Popularly known as “Entebbe Zoo", Uganda Wildlife Education Centre (UWEC) is located in Entebbe along Lugard Avenue. It was opened in 1952, by the Colonial Government in Uganda, as a reception centre for wild animals that were found as casualties. About the tour First established in 1895 in the Lubiri (Buganda Kingdom's palace) and later shifted to Kagugube - in temporary structure, the market was in 1927 established in the middle of Uganda's Capital city -Kampala. The market is divided into two; one area being partially covered and closed in an old building where you can find hardware, clothes and tourist materials; and the open area where fresh produce from gardens is sold. Nakasero Market employs over 10,000 people including Rosemary's father. So join us this weekend as we go shopping for fresh produces and as we learn Ugandan Sign language for the different items and their names in Local language 'Luganda'.
